An Overview Of Specialized Kinesiology
by Karen Johnson, CHt. MHt.

What is Specialized Kinesiology?

Perhaps you've heard the term kinesiology. The word derives from the Greek and is often translated as 'study of motion' particularly the study of how muscles act in concert to move the body. The term Specialized Kinesiology is often used to indicate the many systems which have sprung from Applied Kinesiology and Touch for Health. Specialized Kinesiology taps into the body's unique capacity to heal itself. Eliminating blocks to health and wellbeing. It is based upon the holistic approach to health dealing with the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual issues that limit us from being who we really are.

How did it begin?

In the late 1800s D.D. Palmer rediscovered the science of chiropractic. Then in the early 1960s Dr. George Goodheart developed a new system for working with muscles. Using his basic ideas and combining them with chiropractic and ancient oriental practices, Specialized Kinesiology in its present form came into being.

What does it encompass?

Specialized Kinesiology acts as an umbrella covering the many branches of the tree of applied kinesiology: edu-kinesiology, behavioural kinesiology, energy-kinesiology, bio-kinesiology, one brain, body talk, etc. It is a therapy that can be applied as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool and is frequently used to identify physical and emotional imbalances in the system. Since the body retains a memory of its emotional as well as its physical trauma, specialized kinesiology accesses this body memory by utilizing muscle testing to discover the origin of the occurrence.

Specialized Kinesiology: How Does It Work?

This therapy uses muscle testing to tap into the body's knowledge. Individual cells hold memories, for example, past actions, physical and emotional traumas, and genetic coding: it's all contained within your own body.

In specialized kinesiology this memory is generally referred to as a 'program'. These programs are frequently rooted in past trauma or incidents that the body identifies as trauma which can cause imbalances in the body. It is amazing how often problems can be tracked back to some unique 'program' that the body system is responding to.

Specialized Kinesiology employs the philosophy and techniques from Applied Kinesiology, Chinese Medicine, NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming), Energy Medicine, Acupressure, Vibrational Medicine, Bodywork, Chiropractic and the latest in Neurology and Brain research.

Using this knowledge, specialized kinesiology goes to the root or addresses the source of the issue. The kinesiologist makes the appropriate corrections to bring the system from a state of dis-ease or imbalance into the desired state of health and balance.

What you discover with specialized kinesiology is that it provides a platform from which to present the body or system with stimuli so that it can now find the way to process or deconstruct the issue, so the cycle can finally be completed. The symptoms will then disappear because they are no longer needed since the issue has been cleared or released.

It really is that simple.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am feeling stuck in my job, can specialized kinesiology help me move forward?

A: First, we would do an assessment and then depending on the diagnosis, we would look to flag the program limiting you. For example, it could be rooted in a past experience from elementary school when a teacher treated you unfairly.

As an adult in some stressful situations your body relives these emotions that it has stored and identified as trauma. We would then look to defuse this program and set in motion a different, positive response to similar situations.

Q: I suffer from arthritis and currently experience pain in one wrist and both my knees. Does specialized kinesiology work for physical pain?

A: We do not simply treat the symptom, organ, or dis-ease; we are helping the whole person. We test the muscles and treat the weaknesses we find, not what we guess would be there because of some symptom or pathological condition. Physical blockages and pain often reflect corresponding emotional blockages. We've always known that pain was there to give us a message and now we look to decode the message and unearth the program or condition contributing to the problem. We look for cause and clear it.

Q: I have a phobia about speaking in front of large groups and I have to make a presentation can specialized kinesiology help me do it?

A: We look for the root of the problem or program and defuse it. Also remember, any time we are blocked in one area of our life it is most likely impacting other areas.

Q: I have trouble with intimacy and maintaining relationships. Can specialized kinesiology help me solve these problems?

A: Relationships are one of the biggest and most common issues we all struggle with. The first thing we need to do is to identify the emotions or programs being activated in these situations. Often when experiencing conflict we revert back to learned behaviour, from our own childhood or inappropriate behaviours modeled by our parents or other significant role models that no longer serve us. The kinesiologist helps us to recognize and repattern the behaviour or belief so we can learn to make different choices.

Q: What conditions does Specialized Kinesiology address?

  • A: Reduce stress
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Physical or emotional traumas
  • Physical ailments and pain
  • Release phobias and traumas
  • Addictions and allergies
  • Enhancing performance
  • Feeling stuck, blocked or stagnated
  • Memory, vision, coordination and learning problems
  • Create a sense of ease with self and others
    and much more....

Excerpts from: POWER VS. FORCE
The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior
by David R. Hawkins, M.D., P.H.D.

"Kinesiology is now a well-established science, based on the testing of an all-or-none muscle response stimulus. A positive stimulus provokes a strong muscle response; a negative stimulus results in a demonstrable weakening of the test muscle. Clinical kinesiological muscle testing as a diagnostic technique has found widespread verification over the last 25 years..."

"Man's two basic types of operational faculties, reason and feeling, are both inherently unreliable, as our history of precarious individual and collective survival attests. Although we ascribe our actions to reason, man in fact operates primarily out of pattern recognition; the logical arrangement of data serves manly to enhance a pattern-recognition system that then becomes "truth"..."

"The main obstacle to man's development, then, is his lack of knowledge about the nature of consciousness itself. If we look within ourselves at the instant-by-instant processes of our minds, we'll soon notice that the mind acts much more rapidly than it would acknowledge. It becomes apparent that the notion that our actions are based on thoughtful decisions is a grand illusion..."

"Kinesiology exposed, for the first time, the intimate connection between mind and body, revealing that the mind "thinks" with the body itself. Therefore, it provided an avenue for the exploration of the ways consciousness reveals itself in the subtle mechanisms behind the disease process..."

"Consciousness automatically chooses what it deems best from moment to moment because that ultimately is the only function of which it is capable..."

"As we've seen, consciousness reacts decisively to the difference between truth and falsehood. You may instantly reconfirm this by stating your true age (let's say that you're 43 years old), "I am 43 years old," and having someone press down on your extended arm. You'll stay strong. Now say, "I am 45 years old," and you'll instantly go weak. Like a computer, consciousness simply answers 0 or 1, true or false..."

"We can identify the level of truth of any statement, belief system, or body of knowledge...This capacity to instantly differentiate the truth from falsehood is of such extraordinary potential value to society..."
